She completed her higher secondary education from Deshbandhu Sishu Sikshalay in 1970. She subsequently earned a bachelor's degree in history from Jogamaya Devi College, followed by a master's degree in Islamic history from the University of Calcutta. In 1997, following differences with the West Bengal Pradesh Congress Committee leadership, Banerjee left the Congress and helped establish the All India Trinamool Congress along with Mukul Roy. Banerjee entered the National Democratic Alliance government in 1999 and became Railway Minister. During her first tenure, she introduced several new train services and promoted railway connectivity involving West Bengal.
