Ravindra Kishan Shukla (born 17 July 1969), popularly known as Ravi Kishan, is an Indian actor, politician, film producer, and television personality. He currently serves as a Member of Parliament, Lok Sabha, representing Gorakhpur. In 2025, he received the Sansad Ratna Award for his outstanding performance in parliamentary duties. His work primarily spans Bhojpuri and Hindi cinema, though he has also acted in Telugu, Kannada, and Tamil films.

Early life and education

Ravi Kishan was born on 17 July 1969 in Bombay, Maharashtra, India. He is the youngest of five siblings. He completed his schooling up to the 12th standard at Rizvi College, Bandra West, Mumbai. His family originally hails from Kerakat in Jaunpur district, Uttar Pradesh, where he lived for about seven years during his childhood.

Personal life

Ravi Kishan married Priti Shukla on 10 December 1993. The couple has four children — one son and three daughters. His daughter Riva Kishan made her film debut with Sab Kushal Mangal in 2020. His other daughter, Ishita Kishan, who was an NCC cadet, joined the Indian Army in June 2023.

Film career

Ravi Kishan began his acting career in the early 1990s and went on to become one of the most popular actors in Bhojpuri cinema. In 2006, he participated in the first season of Bigg Boss, where he finished as the second runner-up. He was later seen as a contestant on Jhalak Dikhhla Jaa 5 in 2012.

In 2008, he received the Most Popular Actor Award at the ETV Bhojpuri Cinema Samman. Over the years, he has appeared in several reality television shows such as Ek Se Badhkar Ek – Jalwe Sitaron Ke, Bathroom Singer, Naman: Ek Sansani, and Raaz Pichhle Janam Ka, which he hosted for two seasons on NDTV Imagine. He has also worked with acclaimed film directors like Shyam Benegal and Mani Ratnam.

One of his notable Bhojpuri films, Jala Debh Duniya Tohra Pyar Mein (2010), produced by the American film company PUN Films, was screened at the Cannes Film Festival. In 2013, he was a judge on the reality TV show Sales Ka Bazigar, telecast on ETV, which aimed to identify the best salesperson in Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand.

Ravi Kishan made his Telugu film debut with Race Gurram (2014), followed by his Kannada debut Hebbuli (2017) and Tamil debut Monisha En Monalisa (1999). In 2018, he appeared in the Telugu film MLA. In 2024, he won both the Filmfare Award for Best Supporting Actor and the IIFA Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Laapataa Ladies.

Political career

Ravi Kishan began his political journey with the Indian National Congress, contesting from the Jaunpur constituency in the 2014 general elections. . In February 2017, he joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

In the 2019 general elections, the BJP nominated him to contest from Gorakhpur, where he won by a margin of over 3,01,000 votes against Samajwadi Party candidate Rambhual Nishad. In the 2024 general elections, he retained his seat by defeating Samajwadi Party’s Kajal Nishad with a margin of 1,03,526 votes. As a parliamentarian, he has been actively involved in discussions on regional cinema, the entertainment industry, and various social issues.
