Rahul Rajiv Gandhi (born 19 June 1970) is an Indian politician and senior leader of the Indian National Congress. He has been serving as the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha since June 2024 and represents the Rae Bareli Lok Sabha constituency in Uttar Pradesh. He previously represented Wayanad in Kerala from 2019 to 2024 and Amethi in Uttar Pradesh from 2004 to 2019.
A member of the Nehru–Gandhi family, Gandhi is the son of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi and Congress leader Sonia Gandhi. He is the grandson of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and the great-grandson of India's first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru. Gandhi served as president of the Indian National Congress from December 2017 to July 2019.
Early Life and Family
Rahul Rajiv Gandhi was born on 19 June 1970 in New Delhi, India, to Rajiv Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi. He is the elder brother of politician Priyanka Gandhi Vadra. His father later served as the sixth Prime Minister of India, while his mother became president of the Indian National Congress.
Gandhi belongs to the Nehru–Gandhi political family, one of India's most prominent political families. His paternal grandfather was Feroze Gandhi, a Member of Parliament and political figure associated with the Indian National Congress.
Following the assassination of his grandmother Indira Gandhi in 1984 and the subsequent security concerns surrounding the family, Gandhi and his sister were educated under increased security arrangements and spent part of their schooling at home.
Education
Gandhi completed his early education at St. Columba's School in New Delhi and later attended The Doon School in Dehradun from 1981 to 1983.
In 1989, he joined St. Stephen's College, Delhi, for undergraduate studies. He subsequently attended Harvard University before moving to Rollins College in Florida, United States, where he completed his undergraduate degree in 1994.
Gandhi later studied at Trinity College, Cambridge, where he obtained a Master of Philosophy (M.Phil.) degree in Development Studies in 1995.
Professional Career
After completing his education, Gandhi worked with the Monitor Group, a management consulting firm based in London. He worked with the organisation for several years before returning to India.
In 2002, he established Backops Services Private Ltd., a technology consultancy based in Mumbai, where he served as one of the directors. He was subsequently associated with BackOps UK, a company involved in business and outsourcing activities.
Entry into Politics
Gandhi formally entered electoral politics in 2004 when he announced that he would contest the Lok Sabha election from Amethi, the former constituency of his father Rajiv Gandhi.
He won the Amethi constituency in the 2004 general election and became a Member of Parliament. He subsequently retained the constituency in the 2009 and 2014 general elections.
During his early parliamentary career, Gandhi served on several parliamentary committees, including committees dealing with Home Affairs and Human Resource Development.
Youth Politics
In September 2007, Gandhi was appointed general secretary of the All India Congress Committee. He was given responsibility for the Indian Youth Congress and the National Students' Union of India.
During his tenure, he promoted greater participation of young people in Congress organisations and supported organisational reforms within the Youth Congress and student wing.
The Indian Youth Congress underwent structural changes during this period, including efforts to introduce more democratic internal processes and increase youth participation in party activities.
Congress Leadership
Gandhi was appointed vice-president of the Indian National Congress in January 2013. He became president of the party in December 2017, succeeding Sonia Gandhi.
As Congress president, Gandhi led the party during the 2019 Indian general election. The Congress won 52 Lok Sabha seats in the election. Gandhi retained the Wayanad constituency but lost Amethi to Bharatiya Janata Party candidate Smriti Irani.
Following the 2019 election, Gandhi resigned as Congress president and was succeeded by Sonia Gandhi as interim president.
2014 General Election
Gandhi led the Congress campaign during the 2014 Indian general election and contested from Amethi. He retained the constituency by defeating Smriti Irani.
The Indian National Congress won 44 seats in the election, its lowest-ever number of Lok Sabha seats at that time. Gandhi continued to serve as a prominent opposition figure following the formation of the Narendra Modi-led government.
2019 General Election
During the 2019 general election campaign, Gandhi promoted the Congress party's proposed Nyuntam Aay Yojana (NYAY), a minimum-income guarantee proposal aimed at the poorest households.
He contested from both Amethi and Wayanad. Gandhi lost Amethi but won Wayanad with a significant vote share, allowing him to remain a Member of Parliament.
The Congress won 52 seats in the 2019 election.
Bharat Jodo Yatra
In 2022–2023, Gandhi led the Bharat Jodo Yatra, a nationwide political march organised by the Indian National Congress.
The march travelled across several states and focused on themes including national unity, social harmony, economic inequality, unemployment and political participation.
The campaign became one of Gandhi's most prominent political initiatives and increased his visibility among sections of the Indian electorate.
Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra
In 2024, Gandhi led the Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, a nationwide political campaign focused on social justice, economic issues, employment and equality.
The yatra formed part of the Congress party's broader campaign ahead of the 2024 Indian general election.
2024 General Election
Gandhi contested the 2024 Indian general election from Rae Bareli in Uttar Pradesh and Wayanad in Kerala. He won both constituencies.
The Indian National Congress won 99 seats in the 2024 Lok Sabha election, representing a significant improvement over its performance in 2014 and 2019. The result allowed the Congress to regain the position of the official opposition party in the Lok Sabha.
Gandhi subsequently vacated the Wayanad seat and retained Rae Bareli as his parliamentary constituency.
On 9 June 2024, Gandhi became the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha. He became the first person to hold the position on behalf of the Congress since Mallikarjun Kharge's predecessor period and one of the most prominent opposition figures in Parliament.

Farmers and Land Rights
Gandhi has repeatedly raised issues concerning farmers and land acquisition.
In 2015, he addressed the Kisan Khet Mazdoor Rally at Ramlila Maidan in New Delhi, where he criticised proposed changes to India's land-acquisition framework and argued for stronger protections for farmers and agricultural workers.
He has subsequently continued to raise agricultural policy and rural economic issues in Parliament and during political campaigns.

He has commented on terrorism, India's relations with neighbouring countries, border security and the role of security institutions. Several of his statements on security and communal issues have generated political controversy and criticism from opposing parties.
