Although he was still considered a developing bowler, his pace, bounce, and improved control earned praise from coaches and selectors.
Indian Premier League and Global T20 Circuit
Jansen’s breakthrough on the global stage came in 2021 when the Mumbai Indians signed him during the IPL auction. Making his IPL debut on 9 April 2021 against Royal Challengers Bangalore, he bowled impressively, taking 2 for 28, including the wicket of Glenn Maxwell. His debut performance revealed his ability to handle pressure in high-profile T20 environments.
Later in 2021, he was added to Eastern Province’s squad for the domestic season, further strengthening his presence in South African cricket.
In February 2022, Jansen was bought by Sunrisers Hyderabad for the 2022 IPL season. His pace, bounce, and lower-order hitting made him a valuable asset. He later joined Sunrisers Eastern Cape for the SA20 league, contributing significantly to their performances.
In 2023, he was selected by Washington Freedom for the inaugural Major League Cricket (MLC) season in the United States. His presence helped elevate the league’s international appeal.
During the 2025 IPL Auction, he was purchased by Punjab Kings for ₹7 crore, reflecting his growing value as a global T20 all-rounder.
International Career
Test Career
Jansen received his first senior national call-up in January 2021 when he was added to South Africa’s Test squad for the tour of Pakistan. Though he did not debut during that series, his selection indicated that the national selectors viewed him as a long-term investment.
In December 2021, he was again included in South Africa’s squad, this time for the home Test series against India. He made his Test debut on 26 December 2021 at Centurion. His maiden Test wicket was that of India’s pace bowler Jasprit Bumrah, caught by Wiaan Mulder. Over the series, Jansen impressed with his control, swing, and ability to trouble top-order batters with steep bounce.
ODI and T20 International Debuts
Jansen made his ODI debut on 19 January 2022 against India during the home ODI series. His left-arm angle and seam movement added diversity to South Africa’s bowling attack.
In June 2022, he made his T20 International (T20I) debut against India. His versatility across formats earned him a reputation as one of South Africa’s emerging multi-format fast bowlers.
He represented South Africa in the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup, where his all-round ability made him a key member of the squad.
T20 World Cup 2024 and Further Breakthrough
Jansen was selected for the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, helping South Africa reach the final, where they finished as runners-up. His performances throughout the tournament demonstrated his improved power-hitting and death-overs bowling.
Record-breaking Performances (2024–2025)
In November 2024, Jansen was named in the T20I squad for the home series against India. In the third match, he delivered one of the most explosive innings by a South African cricketer in T20I history, scoring 54 off 17 balls, reaching his half-century in just 16 deliveries. This made him:
- the fastest player to score a T20I fifty against India, and
- the second-fastest South African to achieve the milestone (behind Quinton de Kock).
Later in November 2024, he was selected for the Test series against Sri Lanka. During the first Test at Kingsmead, he produced a career-defining spell, taking 7 for 13 and bowling Sri Lanka out for 42, their lowest Test total ever. This performance made him:
- the first South African to take a 10-wicket match haul at Kingsmead,
- the first left-arm South African seamer to achieve the feat, and
- one of the best bowling figures by a South African in modern Test cricket.
His consistency, adaptability, and ability to perform both with the ball and bat have made him a central figure in South Africa’s future plans across formats.
