Deepak Chahar (born 7 August 1992) is an Indian international cricketer known for his right-arm medium-pace swing bowling. He represents Rajasthan in domestic cricket and plays for the Mumbai Indians in the Indian Premier League (IPL). A prominent swing bowler, Chahar was part of the Indian squad that won the 2018 Asia Cup.

In 2019, he became the first Indian male cricketer to take a hat-trick in a Twenty20 International (T20I). His extraordinary spell of 6 wickets for 7 runs against Bangladesh earned him the ICC T20I Performance of the Year 2020, marking one of the finest bowling displays in T20I history.

Early and Personal Life

Chahar was born in Agra, Uttar Pradesh, in 1992. Cricket runs in his family—his younger cousin Rahul Chahar is also an international cricketer. His sister, Malti Chahar, is a Bollywood actress, writer, and director.

During the 2021 Indian Premier League, Chahar publicly proposed to his Delhi-based partner Jaya Bhardwaj after Chennai Super Kings’ final league match. The couple later married on 1 June 2022 in Agra.

Domestic Career

Chahar made a sensational entry into first-class cricket during the 2010–11 Ranji Trophy, taking 8 wickets for 10 runs (8/10) against Hyderabad. This performance led to Hyderabad being bowled out for 21 runs, the lowest total in Ranji Trophy history. His early success helped him earn a youth contract with the Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League.

In 2016, Chahar joined the Rising Pune Supergiants, and later that year trained under international coaches Ian Pont and Catherine Dalton at a Rajasthan development camp.

He was signed by the Chennai Super Kings in the 2018 IPL auction, contributing significantly to their campaigns. He continued with CSK, including being purchased again in the 2022 IPL auction, although a back injury ruled him out of that season.

On 25 November 2024, during the IPL mega auction in Jeddah, Chahar was signed by the Mumbai Indians, marking a new phase in his franchise cricket journey.

International Career

Chahar’s international debut came in May 2018, when he was selected for India’s T20I squad for the England tour. He made his T20I debut on 8 July 2018, followed by his ODI debut against Afghanistan in the 2018 Asia Cup.

In 2019, Chahar delivered one of the most memorable bowling performances for India, winning the Player of the Match award against the West Indies with figures of 3/4. Later that year, he produced a historic spell against Bangladesh in a T20I, taking 6/7 and claiming India’s first-ever T20I hat-trick.

In July 2021, he scored his maiden ODI half-century, and in September he was named among the reserves for the 2021 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup. In January 2022, Chahar scored his second ODI fifty against South Africa, showcasing his growing all-round abilities.
